Message from the President

Toshihiro TAKAMI

President of Neurospinal Society of Japan

Toshihiro TAKAMI, M.D., Ph.D.

Neurospinal society of Japan (NSJ) started in 1986 as "National study group for neurosurgeons to discuss the spine and spinal cord diseases", and has gradually developed as "Society representing the field of spine and spinal cord surgery in neurosurgical practice".

Spine and spinal cord diseases include not only age-related degenerative diseases of the cervical and lumbar spine, but also congenital diseases, trauma, tumors, vascular disorders, and peripheral nerve diseases. We neurosurgeons comprehensively target the diseases that are directly linked to life-threatening conditions as well as the diseases that affect the quality of life. Although the medical field of spine surgery overlaps between neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, the competition, cooperation, and fusion between them are progressing not only in Japan but also internationally. The strength of spine surgery done by neurosurgeons, what we call it as neurospine surgery, is the precise and safe surgery based on neurology with considering the global relation between local spinal condition and global musculoskeletal system.

The mission of NSJ is to advance the neurospine surgery through the information sharing among NSJ members, education, research, international exchange, and finally to contribute to the national health and welfare. NSJ will continue to take on these challenges, and find the solutions.
